Cumberland Gap High School is happy to announce that we will now have our own Panthers Chapter of The National Honors Society (NHS). The Honors Society is a great addition to students’ college applications and resumes. Potential candidates soon will be invited to apply to join. Minimum requirements for admission include:
Must be a current Junior or Senior, in good standing in all areas
A minimum GPA of 3.8 in all classes
Three letters of recommendation demonstrating the student’s record of academic, leadership, and community service excellence, two of which must be from a teacher in the building.
2 or fewer unexcused absences (all years)
No ISS or OSS
No record of persistent disciplinary problems
If invited, students must complete an application process and will be voted on by an academic council of 5 teachers. Their advisor will be a sixth, non-voting, member of the council.
If admitted, the student will pay dues of 20 dollars per year. Students are also required to maintain good academic and behavioral standing. They must also take part in fund raising of 100 dollars per year and must perform 25 hours of community service per academic year. Students are also required to maintain all of the standards as put forth in the National Constitution which can be found online, including attendance at meetings and the induction ceremony. If a student is unwilling to meet these requirements, we respectfully ask that he or she not apply for admission.
