CRIMINAL JUSTICE I ASSIGNMENT

APRIL 13-17, 2020

Hello my favorite students!  I sure do miss our time together and I miss seeing your smiling faces in my classroom.  When times were tough for me, my mom used to say, “this too shall pass.” Well, this will pass and we will soon get back our “normal.”  In the meantime, if you are struggling, be sure and reach out to your classmates or me. The human race was not designed to be better alone, but better together!!!

This week I promised a fun activity.  You get to write a story about a crime that has taken place, how the police handled the crime and how YOU, the lawyer gets to defend that your client’s civil rights were violated!   You must include in your story the Constitutional Amendment that was violated and why your case must be “thrown out” of court.” Remember, the U.S. Supreme Court ONLY hears cases that violate a person’s individual rights.  They do not hear cases where you simply do not like the outcome. If it would be helpful to you, you may review the Landmark Cases that we talked about and research others if you please. Remember, this will be a case that hasn’t actually occurred, but a “story” that you will invent.

Have fun and I can’t wait to read what you came up with!  The goal is to turn this assignment in by April 17th by 3:00.  If you have questions, please send me a message in g-mail or google classroom.  😊

If you have Internet at home, or a cell phone, you can access your assignments on Google Classroom.  For those without Internet or a cell phone, assignments will be handed out at the homework drive-thru.

1st and 4th block students, continue monitoring your Stock Market portfolio.  I know it disheartening for those of you that have lost thousands of dollars.  Hang in there!  In time, it will start going back up.  I noticed some of you have large balance in ‘Cash Available’.

ACT PREP For each week in April, you will spend time practicing for and taking one practice test of your choice (reading, math, science, etc.) You must take the whole test and send me a screenshot or picture of your results. That means you will be taking a total of 4 practice tests and sending me what you got. Here is the link for the practice test website. Just scroll down until you see the type of test you want to take. https://www.act.org/content/act/en/search.html#stq=practice%20tests Additionally, if you need help or have questions over any particular subject, just email me.

BIOLOGY Assignment #1 – National Geographic Reporter. For this assignment, go to the National Geographic website https://www.nationalgeographic.com and find an article that interests you. It must be about how humans have impacted the environment. Read the entire article and write a short reflection on it (about 1⁄2 a page). If you prefer not to write, you may create a slideshow instead.

Assignment #2: Alcoholic vs. Lactic Acid fermentation Watch this video (it’s only about 5 min. long) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XREALVgxBEI Draw a flowchart (diagram) for the two processes explained in the video, showing all the steps and important products. In other words, I should get one diagram for alcoholic fermentation, and one diagram for lactic acid fermentation. If you can’t open the video, just use Google to find the information you need. No excuses!

Assignment #3 Cellular Respiration For this assignment, you will be teaching ME about the three phases of cellular respiration: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Create a lesson that teaches me about each of these phases (pretend I didn’t know anything at all about them, and you wanted to make it easy for me to understand). You can use a slideshow, or bullet points, or drawings. There is no required length for this assignment. Just be sure not to leave anything important out. I would suggest watching a few YouTube videos for research before getting started. Here are a few to help out if you need them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZONAx1hnv0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG12CMszYLI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX7J2JtxM08

Assignment #4: Mitosis and Meiosis For this assignment, draw a chart illustrating the processes of mitosis on one side of your paper, and meiosis on the other side. Be sure to include every step and LABEL the pictures in each step. Label the chromosomes, the mitotic spindles, the metaphase plates, the nuclear envelope, and the cellular membrane or cell wall. After you are done making your illustrations, create a chart that tells me about BOTH the important similarities AND differences between mitosis and meiosis.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

WEEK 1: Assignment #1: For this assignment, write a reflection on the egg-cage drop that we did before school was let out. What was successful about your design? What wasn’t? What would you have done to change your design to make it better if you could do it over? What are your thoughts about working in a group or working alone (whichever one you did)? This assignment should be 1 whole page. NOT LESS.

WEEK 2: Assignment #2: Draw and label at least TWO different models for atomic structure. (Bohr’s model, electron cloud model, etc.) Write a short paragraph beneath each model explaining its strengths or weaknesses, its history (how it came about) and whether or not it is still used today.

WEEK3: Assignment #3: Chemical reaction cheat-sheet. For this assignment, first watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OttRV5ykP7A Then, create a chart explaining the 5 factors that can speed up a chemical reaction in your own words.

WEEK4: Assignment #4: Watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOiYyNm92Ws

Explain the principles of physics behind why longer screws secure a door better than shorter screws. Be sure to talk about the distribution of force, as well as impact and static and elastic collisions. Use Google if you need extra help. (1⁄2 page)

I know many of you don’t like doing things at home so I am trying to assign things that I think will be beneficial to you.  The first assignment is a carer project.  It’s never too early for you to start thinking about your future and researching possible careers of interest.

The second thing you are going to do is choose One of the following options to do:  either keep a blog or create a series of Youtube videos.

The third thing is that I will post a short video each week of either a cooking show or something like that.  I want you to make a comment on the feed in the Google Classroom.

Details about each assignment are below.  Remember everyone must do the career project and comment on videos that I assign on Google Classroom.  You only have to choose one of either the Youtube or blog assignments.

CAREER PROJECT:

Take three career interest inventories.

After taking the career tests, choose 5 careers that are of interest to you.  Either write a paper or create a Google Slide presentation for each of your five careers.  You need to do each paper or google slide show individually and send me at least one career each week.  For example send career 1 this week, career 2 the week of April 6, career 3 the week of April 13, career 4 the week of April 20, and career 5 the week of April 27.  You can do more than one career per week if you want to work ahead and get it done but the minimum is one career each week. ALL WORK IS BEING GRADED!! The following information must be found for each career:

  1. Overview
  2. Education Requirements/Licensing Requirements
  3. Training programs or colleges with that program of study
  4. Skills, competencies, and professional traits required for the job
  5. Salary
  6. Environment (is it an inside or outside job, where are jobs located, do you work alone or in groups, etc)
  7. Local and national job projections/outlook
  8. Reasons you would like or dislike the career

One great resource for finding information about jobs is the Bureau of Labor Statistics website found at https://www.bls.gov/  There is a career occupational handbook on the site that can be helpful as well as using the search bar at the top and typing in the career of choice.  The purpose of this assignment is to challenge you during this time of no formal school to really think about and research jobs that you would be interested in.  Your future will be here sooner than you think so take this time to really think about things you would like to do. Remember you must do this for 5 different careers.

Blog or Youtube video

Blog:  Blogging or journaling are great ways of recording things.  Just as you see a great change in your pictures from now versus 5 years ago, you can also see a huge change in your thoughts and feelings if you blog or journal about things.  Here is an article that you can read about blogging and how to start a blog.https://www.bloggingbasics101.com/how-do-i-start-a-blog/  The wordpress website will give you other bloggers who use it that you can subscribe to if there are things that interest you.  Make sure if you use this website then when creating a domain name make sure you scroll down to the one that is free and doesn’t have a renewal fee.

I am familiar with the wix website which isn’t listed so you can choose one of the free websites from the article or  https://www.wix.com/ as your blog platform.

Create an account and start a blog.

You must blog at least 3 times each week about any topic that you would like.

You must send me the link so I can see what you are posting.

Be cautious about setting up your account as to whether it is private or public and if you have any questions, feel free to send me a message through google classroom or we can do a zoom video session and I can help you work through the problem. And, hey, some of you might become famous blogger because of

some crazy assignment during the “coronocation”.

Youtube Video:  Youtube is a platform that many people use for entertainment and to learn things.  You will be creating two Youtube videos of yourself doing/teaching something. For example, you could make a cooking video of you preparing a food and then a follow up video with a different food.  Or, you could do one video of you making cookies and the next video of you decorating the cookies. Another example is you could make a video of yourself showing how to apply makeup for one event and a second video showing how to do hair for an event. If you have any questions about the kinds of videos to make, feel free to message me through Google classroom.   Once you have completed the video, email me the link so that I can watch it. Also, if you live close to your friends, this can be done as a group project. Just be cautious to follow the social distancing rules but have fun doing it! And, hey, some of you may become famous Youtubers because of some crazy assignment during the “coronocation”.

Class Videos to Watch: The third thing you will be asked to do is to watch a few videos during the next month.  I will post these on google classroom. The first videos will be this week and will either be on cooking, blogging, or creating youtube videos.  When you get these assignments, just follow the links and the instructions provided.

Also, if some of you are wondering what the difference in work for students with and without internet access is, you will both be doing the same quantity of work, but they will be creating everything with paper and pencil versus online.

Ranee Petty

Hello everyone!! I sure do miss you! Yes, I really do miss each one of you.  This is a challenge like no other, but we will get through it. I want each of you to know you can reach out to me as I will be available almost all the time, but most definitely from 8 am to 3 pm daily. Saturdays and Sundays I could be somewhat delayed at answering, but I will answer ASAP. Do not hesitate to ask, tell, or even suggest whatever you need or think could make this process more user friendly.

Most importantly, I hope and pray each of you and your families are healthy and safe. Please remember, on Thursday, April 2, 2020, 9:30-11:30, there will be food distributions at CHS where you can pick up food bags for each person in your family who is 18 and under. During this same time, you can pick up actual packets of what I have sent via email and Google Classroom (first and second block only for Google Classroom) for you to be working on this week. This is also the time you can return any assignments you have completed. While I do prefer you return them electronically, as that is the safest way during this pandemic, I will accept paper copies, however, you should expect a delay of at least a week in grading them. Remember, you can always snap a picture of your completed work and send it to me via email, I will even accept answer sheets if you have not been able to print the worksheets off. Let’s remember, this process is about making progress, not perfection, we will work together to get through it. Let me know if you have a situation beyond your control so we can figure out together what might accommodate you best.

My email is ranee.petty@claibornecsd.org

Please, each one of my students, reach out to me at least once a week. Just send me an email, let me know you’re ok, you can even vent about the “cabin fever” you may be experiencing.

ALWAYS take care of your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health first and foremost as we navigate through this questionable time.

I’ll be anxiously awaiting to hear from each of you. Health, safety, and happiness to each of you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Petty
